The battle flag of the Confederacy is square, of various sizes for the different branches of the service: 48 inches square for the infantry, 36 inches for the artillery, and 30 inches for the cavalry. It was used in battle from November 1861 to the fall of the Confederacy.
Joshua Douglas - American Civil War: 1861-1865
Daughter of Stephen Hart
Did she or didn't she marry Joshua?
As often as not, the information on the family trees is inaccurate because people are chasing a wrong bloodline and Joshua Douglas on the 1900 Census Webster County West Virginia is the wrong bloodline for Rebel Hart of Roane County.
Joshua Douglas of Webster County West Virginia
Clues in Census Records
  • There's been a lot of controversy surrounding the 1900s census factor and here's a reason to stop and think, the name Keenes on the 1900 Census Webster Co WV Glade #512 wouldn’t be Kenos because in the mid 1890 he was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Reed so to the best of my knowledge, there is no way this could be Nancy Hart Confederate Spy of Roane County West Virginia born abt.1846/???? .
  • Joshua Douglas Birth doesn't match the Richwood West Virginia tombstone, (Click to see picture). ....1900 Census Webster Co WV Glade #512 Joshua Douglas born June 1841
  • Nancy never learned to read or write and the 1900 Census Webster Co WV Glade #512 Nancy can read/write.
  • Nancy born abt. 1846 and the 1900 Census Webster Co WV Glade #512 Nancy birth July 1843
  • By the 1900 Census Webster County West Virginia we got to assume that Joshua Douglas courtship and marriage was during the Civil War era and some says that she's married Joshua May 1862 but legend says Calhoun's Moccasin Rangers, Perry Connolly, was Nancy boyfriend and to the best of my knowledge Captain Perry Connolly was killed in Webster county in the early summer of 1862 so this Webster County Nancy is not the Civil War spy.
  • The first-born child of Joshua Douglas and Nancy of Webster County West Virginia was a son, born on July 1866 in Kentucky. So they probably moved to Kentucky in the 60’s, Kentucky was officially neutral at the beginning of the war, moved to Virginia in 1870 and then to Webster County West Virginia in the early 1900's.
  • On the 1900 Census Webster County West Virginia Glade #512 Joshua Douglas first born son is Keenes, his wife name is Hailey.
  • Maiden name of Joshua Douglas wife is not yet proven or verified.

  • There is only one known Nancy Hart in Roane County VA., daughter of Stephen Hart, no records found for Nancy Hart in Webster, Greenbrier Counties from 1860 to 1900. Found 2 Nancy Hart records in Nicholas County but no connection to Joshua Douglas of Webster County West Virginia.

  • Joshua Douglas of Calhoun County was born in Braxton County Virginia 1836 and Joshua in the 1900 Webster County census born in West Virginia 1841.

    Joshua Census
    Richwood WV Joshua Douglas
    Birth: May 24, 1838
    Death: Oct. 25, 1907
  • In the 1850 Braxton County VA census, John is listed as a widower with two children.
  • Joshua Duglas on the 1900 Webster County census probably lived in Kentucky during the civil war and returned to Virginia in 1870 and then to Webster County West Virginia.

  • Joshua Douglas on the Braxton County census probably lived in Calhoun County during the civil war. Some old newspapers stories might lead one to believe that Joshua turned to a life of crime, burning houses, slaughtering livestock, even killing. Much of the supposed activity might be blamed on bands of bandits and his first cousin Martin Douglas in the 1880 Calhoun County Census served in Calhoun County's Moccasin Rangers during the Civil War wounded at Arnoldsburg, Calhoun County VA May 6, 1862.
  • Joshua Douglas of the 1880 Calhoun Census is the second cousin of Joshua Douglas in the 1850 Braxton county VA Census.
  • Joshua Douglas (1880 and 1900 Calhoun County Census), a son of Martin Douglas, was born in June 1863 married Catherine 1883 and his father Martin served in Calhoun County's Moccasin Rangers.
  • Perry Connolly and Nancy Hart, 1846/? Confederate Spy!

  • Calhoun old-timers say Nancy's parents (Stephen and Mary Hart) lived on both sides of the West Fork in Roane and Calhoun counties and those "old-timers" can recall Nancy and Perry Connolly, actually no one ever remembers Joshua. One old-timer spoke up and said Nancy always has been a wild spirit girl that no one will tame. She'll howl all night long, she just can't be tamed; she will pounce and take charge whenever the opportunity strikes and not even the Rangers Perry Connolly can tame this she devil beast. If Nancy married a Ranger he wouldn’t survived the first year.
  • I don't believe that Rebel Hart of Roane County would take a husband, because it would be a threat to her way of life.

  • Joshua served in the 5th Regiment, Virginia State Line.

  • Register of Deaths Greenbrier County, West Virginia
Doesn't appear to be Joshua Douglas of the "Moccasin Rangers
Name: Joslin or Joshua, Dougllas or Douglas 1835-1907 (I believe this person is Joslin Dougllas).
    Sex: Male
    Death Date: Oct 25 1907
Death Place: Cordova, Greenbrier, West Virginia
  • Cordova is 6 miles northwest of Falling Spring (also called Renick).

  • I don't believe they would bury him in Richwood, just to far away on horses and horse-drawn wagons.

  • Age at Death: 72
    Calculated Birth Year: 1835
Calculated Joslin age at the beginning of the civil war: 26
    Marital Status: Married
Person giving Information of Death his Son: K. M. Dougllas

  • The person Joshua Douglas buried in Richwood West Virginia cemetery doesn't appear to be Joslin Dougllas of Cordova, Greenbrier, West Virginia.

  • Joslin is a form of the English and German name and when use as a boy name in the 18 century it is a variant of Joss.

  • The alternative spelling of Joslin in English, German and Scotland language is Joslina, Joselin and Josslyn.

This is the only Joshua Douglas enlisted in the Confederate Army during the war and 'to the best of my knowledge' he didn't have anything to do with the Moccasin Rangers.
